Olivier Giroud: Chelsea striker signs one-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge

Olivier Giroud has signed a new one-year contract at Chelsea, the Premier League side have confirmed.

The France striker joined the Blues from Arsenal in January 2018, scoring 17 goals in 62 appearances to date.

This season, Giroud has scored 10 goals in the Europa League – becoming the first ever Chelsea player to reach double figures in a single season of European football.

The 18-month deal Giroud signed when he joined from the Gunners expired this summer, and as the World Cup winner struggled for regular playing time there had been speculation he could seek a return to his homeland.

But with Chelsea still facing a transfer ban this summer, subject to an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the club were keen to retain Giroud in an area of the pitch where they remain short of depth.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract,” Giroud said on the Chelsea website.

“I really wanted to stay at least one more year – I have felt a part of the team, the family, since the beginning and hopefully there will be more trophies to come.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “We are very pleased that Olivier will be a Chelsea player for another season.

“Since joining us 18 months ago, he has at times had to be patient and wait for opportunities, but has still been able to make a positive contribution to the team.”

The fight for a top-four finish and Champions League football next season continues to rumble on, with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United laying down a marker. Tottenham hit four past relegated Huddersfield Town in the early kick off, while the late game saw United advance past West Ham courtesy of two first-half penalties.
