English football must solve its own problem with racism, argues Darren Bent

Darren Bent believes English football should take a look in the mirror and solve its own problem with racism before pointing the finger at others – after a night of shame in Podgorica.

Montenegro have been charged by UEFA following the foul racial abuse of England’s players – including Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi – during the Three Lions’ 5-1 victory on Monday night.

Monkey chants were aimed at the trio, and Sterling celebrated the fifth goal by pulling his ears out in defiance to what he later called ‘racists’ on social media.

Sterling is no stranger to racism in his own country, and his abuse at Stamford Bridge in December is just one of several incidents which have shamed the English game this season.

A Tottenham fan was banned for life after throwing a banana skin at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the north London derby, while Millwall were charged for alleged racist chanting in January.

And Bent argues that English football needs to get its own house in order before condemning others.

â€Å“We’re not as bad as other countries, for sure,” the 35-year-old told Jim White.

â€Å“But unless you can sort it out in this country, who are we to say anything to anyone else?

â€Å“The FA has got to take a stand to this – because we’re going to go full pelt at Montenegro and UEFA.

â€Å“They’ll turn around and say, ‘Have you got it under control in your own country?’ And the answer is no.”

Bent, the former England striker, warns that nothing will change unless serious action is taken – and reveals he suffered the same abuse in Montenegro as a youth player.

â€Å“Nothing has been done about it,” he added. â€Å“It’s been the same since I was a kid.

â€Å“I remember going over there as an Under-19 and I received racist abuse then. I remember me, Justin Hoyte and Carlton Cole walking on the pitch and having bananas thrown at us.

â€Å“It doesn’t seem to have improved and you’re talking 15 years.

â€Å“In another ten years’ time we’re still going to be talking about the same thing.”

The disgraceful scenes in Montenegro on Monday night marred what was an impressive full debut for 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The Chelsea winger became the second youngest player ever to start a competitive international for England, but his performance on the pitch was hardly spoken about in the aftermath.

â€Å“He’s a young boy in his first squad and he goes over there and hears that,” Bent continued.

â€Å“It’s disgusting. Something needs to happen. From a human being point of view, it’s disgusting.”
