Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham is on the verge of becoming a regular in the senior England squad, believes former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.
The 21-year-old frontman seriously impressed on loan for the Villans last season, where he has been tipped to return either for another spell or maybe even sign for them permanently.
Abraham ended the season as the Midlands club’s top scorer with 26 goals, playing a huge role in the club’s promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs.
The young striker already had two senior caps for England, earning a call-up in November 2017 during his previous loan spell at Swansea City, although he has not featured since.
While England prepare for their Nations League semi-final clash against the Netherlands, Abraham is expected to play a major role in the Under-21s team when the Young Lions take part in the European Under-21 Championship later in June.
But, after enjoying the best campaign of his club career so far, Bent believes he will soon be steady fixture in Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.
LATEST TRANSFER GOSSIP
“I don’t know if Tammy Abraham should be in this England team now, but I don’t think he’s too far away,” said Bent on Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“I’ve seen him a lot this season and I’m a big fan of his. I think he offers something different.
“If you look at the strikers England have got at the moment in this squad – Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Callum Wilson, I don’t think he’s too far off that.
“I think he holds it up better than Rashford does, Kane is obviously the best at that and Wilson is a big strong physical presence.
“But I feel if he goes back to Aston Villa next season and spends another year on loan in the Premier League and plays week-in week-out, then I think he’s got a great chance.”
