Liverpool losing Premier League title race to Manchester City is ‘tragic bad luck’, says Dean Saunders on talkSPORT

Dean Saunders says Liverpool losing the Premier League title race to Manchester City is like ‘the best race horse in the world’ being beaten by ‘a horse from nowhere’.

The ex-Reds striker says finishing runners-up would be ‘tragic bad luck’ and insists this season should NOT be deemed a failure, even if Jurgen Klopp’s side end the campaign without any silverware.

It seems Jurgen Klopp will end another season at Anfield trophyless

It appears the Premier League title will be returning to the Etihad Stadium this summer after Man City returned to the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Leicester on Monday.

Of course, fans will still be praying for a City slip-up on the final day, but if Liverpool beat Wolves and Pep Guardiola’s men beat Brighton on Sunday the trophy will be City’s for the second year running.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday’s Sports Breakfast, Saunders revealed his heartache for another all-so-near for his former club.

And the Welshman offered his own bizarre analogy to help illustrate Liverpool’s season.

“If you would have asked me at the start of the season, ‘if Liverpool don’t win a trophy is it failure?’, I would have said yes, because they gave the manager another £200million to spend on five players,” he said.

“But now, after seeing the way the season had panned out, it’s not a failure.

“To lose the league with 97 points, it’s just tragic bad luck.

“It’s like the best race horse in the world going ten lengths clear and then another horse from nowhere comes and beats you on the line.”

Saunders also offered his hilarious response to a Liverpool fan who suggested the club should win a trophy for finishing second this season.

Calling into The Sports Bar after City’s victory over Leicester, Cameron the Red told talkSPORT: “Because it been such a gripping title race, we should get a trophy even if we come second this year. If we get 97 points, that’s the best – apart from City last year – anyone has got. Alex Ferguson never got that many points.”

And Saunders says they could call it the ‘We Got More Points Than Fergie Trophy’!
