Travel expert reveals cheapest way for Liverpool and Tottenham fans to get to Champions League final in Madrid

Travel expert Simon Calder has revealed how Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur fans can get to Madrid for the Champions League final as cheaply as possible.

The Reds will face Premier League rivals Spurs at the Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 for the chance to lift the famous trophy in the Spanish capital.

Liverpool fans will be heading to Madrid in their thousands

But, as a result of the extra demand, travel companies are raising their prices to exorbitant levels.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Calder explained just how much companies are looking to exploit fans.

He said: “Since last night, I’ve been following what has been happening to the fares and I must say those Liverpool fans who maybe at the start of the season had faith and bought flying out from Liverpool John Lennon on the 31st May coming back on the 2nd of June have got a real bargain.

“And they are now being paid off because they’ve got a really nice straightforward journey; maybe it’s cost them £100, £150 return?

“That is a fraction of what you are going to have to pay now for a far less comfortable journey.

“And, just in the past two hours, a flight I had my eye on – Ethiopia Airlines can you believe from Madrid to Dublin, early hours of Sunday morning so you can go straight from the stadium to Madrid airport, was £134 a couple of hours ago.

“The lowest price for that flight is now £500. So the options are shutting down by the minute.”

Having reached the Champions League Final in Kiev last year, Reds fans may very be well versed in all of the crafty tricks they can use to overcome the price hikes.

And Calder was happy to also provide a nifty method for fans to see their team in a European final.

“My recommended option instead is to aim for Barcelona, ironically.,” he continued. “Of course, many of those fans just assumed they would be heading to Madrid on the first of June. It is a really big hub for flights and, so far, there isn’t too much of a Liverpool effect in pushing up the prices.

“So for instance, Manchester to Barcelona on the 31st of May returning on the second of June at £402 return is what it was a couple of hours ago, but it’s probably gone up since then.”

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan lives in Malaga, and recommended Spurs fans fly into the city before getting a two-hour fast train into the Spanish capital.

And Calder was happy to offer an equally useful alternative.

He added: “Actually Gatwick to Alicante is the cheapest to mainland Spain that I could find for the weekend – you’re looking at £150 return and then Alicante also has high-speed trains.”
