Barca want to win every Cup: Suarez

Barca want to win every Cup: Suarez
MADRID ̢ۢ Putting on a Barcelona shirt entails an obligation "to live up to the reputation of this club, which is the best in the world" and Ernesto Valverde's men did just that as they ran out 3-0 winners at arch-rivals Real Madrid for a 4-1 aggregate victory on Wednesday.
Luis Suarez was at his clinical best as he scored twice either side of a Raphael Varane own goal, punishing Real for missing a slew of chances in the second leg of the King's Cup semi-final.
After reaching the Cup final for a sixth straight season, the Uruguay striker claimed that he and his teammates had done the club proud.
He said: "This is another demonstration of how good this team is. People keep saying that we don't care about the Cup, but we have shown that we always want to win every single trophy.
"We knew that coming to the Bernabeu would be difficult, but we were aware we had a great opportunity to play in another final."
Teammate Jordi Alba agreed with Suarez, insisting the four-time defending Cup winners "were the better team" and underlined the importance of their triumph.
He added: "We won by a big margin. We had to suffer to win, but overall, we played well.
"We really appreciate the Copa del Rey and Real Madrid wanted to win it too. A lot of their fans arrived early to create a huge atmosphere, so we will not accept the excuse that this is a minor trophy."
And Real coach Santiago Solari accepted the European champions had only themselves to blame for not taking their chances, with Vinicius Jr particularly wasteful.
While Real's best passages of play went through the Brazil Under-20 forward, he missed all six of his attempts, which left his team "going home feeling sad".
Solari said: "Football is also about how clinical you are, and while we were committed and played with energy, we did not take our chances.
"We fell with honour, but it's difficult to talk about fairness or injustice in football.
"We hope that some of the shots we missed today go in on Saturday (in the LaLiga Clasico at Real).
"In football, you have to get back on your feet immediately."

Steve Clarke: Kilmarnock manager appointed Scotland head coach on deal until end of 2022 World Cup qualifying

Steve Clarke: Kilmarnock manager appointed Scotland head coach on deal until end of 2022 World Cup qualifying

Steve Clarke has been named Scotland’s new head coach, the Scottish Football Association has announced.

Clarke, the former St Mirren and Chelsea defender, joins from Kilmarnock a day after guiding them to their highest league finish since 1966.

The 55-year-old replaces Alex McLeish, whose second spell as Scotland boss ended in April.

“The Scottish FA is delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Clarke as Scotland national team head coach,” a statement read.

“Steve joins from Kilmarnock on a three-year contract until the end of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign and was appointed after an extensive recruitment process undertaken by the Scottish FA Chief Executive, Ian Maxwell, and endorsed by the board.”

Clarke’s fine work at Rugby Park saw him named PFA Scotland and Scottish Football Writers’ Association Manager of the Year for 2018/19.

The former West Brom manager has also had spells as coach under Ruud Gullit, Jose Mourinho, Gianfranco Zola and Kenny Dalglish at Newcastle, Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool respectively.

“It is an honour to be appointed Scotland national head coach and I will undertake those responsibilities with pride and commitment,” Clarke said.

Clarke spent the majority of his playing career with Chelsea after starting off at St Mirren

“I firmly believe we have a talented group of players who can achieve success on the international stage. I look forward to working with them and helping them to fulfil those ambitions.”

Clarke spent 11 years at Chelsea as a defender during his playing career, having started out at St Mirren, and retired after making over 400 appearances for the London club in 1998.

The former right-back, who made six appearances for Scotland between 1987 and 1994, became assistant boss at Newcastle under Gullit, who had previously been his manager at Stamford Bridge.

“I appreciate the Scotland supporters have waited a long time for the national team to qualify for a major tournament,” Clarke added.

“Now we have a Women’s World Cup to look forward to in France this summer and it’s my motivation to emulate the success of Shelley Kerr and her squad by leading us to Euro 2020.

“I believe we can qualify and look forward to that journey with the players and the fans, starting against Cyprus and Belgium next month.”

McLeish was sacked in April after 14 months in his second spell in charge of Scotland, having come under increasing pressure due to their disappointing start to the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Travel expert reveals cheapest way for Liverpool and Tottenham fans to get to Champions League final in Madrid

Travel expert Simon Calder has revealed how Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur fans can get to Madrid for the Champions League final as cheaply as possible.

The Reds will face Premier League rivals Spurs at the Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 for the chance to lift the famous trophy in the Spanish capital.

Liverpool fans will be heading to Madrid in their thousands

3

Liverpool fans will be heading to Madrid in their thousands

But, as a result of the extra demand, travel companies are raising their prices to exorbitant levels.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Calder explained just how much companies are looking to exploit fans.

He said: “Since last night, I’ve been following what has been happening to the fares and I must say those Liverpool fans who maybe at the start of the season had faith and bought flying out from Liverpool John Lennon on the 31st May coming back on the 2nd of June have got a real bargain.

“And they are now being paid off because they’ve got a really nice straightforward journey; maybe it’s cost them £100, £150 return?

The Merseysiders completed a remarkable comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday

3

The Merseysiders completed a remarkable comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday

“That is a fraction of what you are going to have to pay now for a far less comfortable journey.

“And, just in the past two hours, a flight I had my eye on – Ethiopia Airlines can you believe from Madrid to Dublin, early hours of Sunday morning so you can go straight from the stadium to Madrid airport, was £134 a couple of hours ago.

“The lowest price for that flight is now £500. So the options are shutting down by the minute.”

Having reached the Champions League Final in Kiev last year, Reds fans may very be well versed in all of the crafty tricks they can use to overcome the price hikes.

Tottenham players celebrate their victory at the end of the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg

3

Tottenham players celebrate their victory at the end of the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg

And Calder was happy to also provide a nifty method for fans to see their team in a European final.

“My recommended option instead is to aim for Barcelona, ironically.,” he continued. “Of course, many of those fans just assumed they would be heading to Madrid on the first of June. It is a really big hub for flights and, so far, there isn’t too much of a Liverpool effect in pushing up the prices.

“So for instance, Manchester to Barcelona on the 31st of May returning on the second of June at £402 return is what it was a couple of hours ago, but it’s probably gone up since then.”

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan lives in Malaga, and recommended Spurs fans fly into the city before getting a two-hour fast train into the Spanish capital.

And Calder was happy to offer an equally useful alternative.

He added: “Actually Gatwick to Alicante is the cheapest to mainland Spain that I could find for the weekend – you’re looking at £150 return and then Alicante also has high-speed trains.”
