Football: Chelsea hold on against Brighton to consolidate top four spot

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea consolidated fourth place in the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday (Dec 16) that became harder work than had seemed likely in the first half.
Having won 4-0 at the Amex Stadium last season, they were on course for a repeat after taking a 2-0 lead at the interval.  Eden Hazard set up the first goal for Pedro after 17 minutes and scored the second himself before half-time following a defensive error.
Brighton came back into contention through Solly March’s goal midway through the second half and Lewis Dunk went close to an equaliser.
The home side have not beaten Chelsea in any competition since 1933 but they stayed 13th in the table, nine points clear of the bottom three places.  Chelsea moved three points clear of London rivals Arsenal, who were beaten at Southampton.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri felt Hazard, whose goal was his first since October, could have done even better, and will do when he recovers full fitness.
“I think that Hazard could have played better because his level is a very high level,” said Sarri.  “He can do more. But I think after the two injuries, he lost the physical condition.
“Now he’s improving. In one or two matches he’ll be back at the top.
“I think that we played a good match, we could have won by more goals."
Hazard, who had been outstanding when scoring twice in the 4-0 January win, made the opening goal with his ninth assist of the season.
Regaining possession after his shot was saved, he played a perfect pass to give Pedro a tap-in.  Brighton contributed to their own downfall 12 minutes from half-time with a poor clearance by Leon Balogun.
Willian intercepted and from his own half sent Hazard through to beat goalkeeper Mat Ryan.
From a position of apparent comfort,Chelsea came under pressure after Marcos Alonso had crashed a shot against the post.
The home team revived, halving their deficit when Bernardo headed back across goal for March to score, but Chelsea held on for an important win.
“We knew we needed to score a third goal, but we didn’t and conceded,” Hazard said. “You feel the pressure, but we managed the game well.
“We want to be top of the league at the end of the season. We know Man City and Liverpool are good teams and we don’t want the gap to be big.”
Brighton’s manager Chris Hughton said: “They had two chances in the first half and scored two goals. We started the game well but you can’t give them the leg up by going behind.
“But I can’t fault the effort our players put in.”

Victor Wanyama: Tottenham midfielder earns comparisons with Lionel Messi thanks to goal against Huddersfield

Tottenham Hotspur needed something special against Huddersfield Town having made seven changes to the team which beat Manchester City in the Champions League.

It came in the most unexpected form, though, as Victor Wanyama shimmied his way around Ben Hamer before rolling the ball into the back of the net for the opening goal of the game.

The Kenyan has had a tough season due to injuries, which have left him on the sideline for the majority of the campaign.

But in an injury crisis, with Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Dele Alli out, manager Mauricio Pochettino called upon him and was rewarded.

Ben Davies pass, which Fernando Llorente failed to control, fell perfectly into his path and Wanyama’s ‘twinkletoes’ did the rest.

Paul Merson slams Patrick Bamford for ‘stitching up’ Leeds with antics against Aston Villa

Paul Merson has blasted Patrick Bamford for ‘stitching up’ Leeds and ‘spoiling his reputation’ after his antics during the crazy 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

The Whites striker has been charged with simulation and looks set to receive a two-match suspension, which would rule him out of the first leg of the club’s play-off semi-final.

Bamford hits the deck

In the aftermath of Mateusz Klich’s controversial opener, Bamford went down clutching his face following a confrontation with Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi – but replays showed there was no contact.

El Ghazi’s red card has since been rescinded and if Bamford accepts his charge, or is found guilty, he will be banned for two games.

The 25-year-old’s absence would be a huge blow for Leeds – and Merson was left bemused by his behaviour.

“Patrick Bamford, what’s he doing?” the Sky Sports pundit said.

“He could stitch Leeds up for the rest of the season, because he’s their only centre forward. He could miss the play offs. Do they know there’s a million cameras there?

“These have done great this season, Leeds. Now they’re going to lose one of their best players. On his day he’s a special player. Now he’s spoilt it and probably his reputation.”

Hazard leads tributes for departing Fabregas
LONDON • Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has paid tribute to Cesc Fabregas, saying that he was "lucky" to have played with the Spaniard ahead of the midfielder's move to French Ligue 1 side Monaco.
Fabregas shared an emotional moment with the Stamford Bridge faithful after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Nottingham Forest, applauding all sides of the crowd while he was also in tears.
The 31-year-old, who joined Chelsea in 2014, will reunite with former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry, who is now the Monaco coach.
"In five years, I can say that I was lucky to play with him," Hazard said.
"Since the beginning when he came, we saw with the first year we won the double together.
"Top guy on the pitch, off the pitch, a great friend of mine.

  • Major trophies Cesc Fabregas won as a Chelsea player.

"Just admiration about this guy. I hope he will have a good future. It's a bit hard now, but he's still very good and he will enjoy."
When asked what Fabregas had given Chelsea, Hazard added: "Everything."
Fabregas moved to the Blues from Barcelona two years after Hazard arrived from Lille. The duo have won two Premier League titles, one League Cup and one FA Cup during their time together.
Chelsea assistant coach Carlo Cudicini also hailed Fabregas as "one of a kind".
"What can I say about Cesc? He is a player who is unique, he has an unbelievable awareness and vision of where his teammates are on the pitch," the former goalkeeper said.
"I think he is one of the few who have the ability to give balls behind the defensive line that are so precise.
"He is a one-of-a-kind player. He has been fantastic for the teams he played for before us and the contribution he has given this club and to this team has been amazing. Cesc is a top, top player."
Cudicini added that Alvaro Morata's two goals in the win over Nottingham Forest would "free his mind" after a lean spell for the Spanish striker.
Morata struck twice in the second half, his first goals in domestic competition for two months.
"It was very important for him to score two goals which can only be good for his confidence. Hopefully, it will be good for his morale that he scored and, hopefully, he will be more free in his mind," Cudicini said.
"For a striker, it's difficult when you go through a spell when you don't score many goals, so his body language was a bit down but, in training, he's working very hard.
"We all knew that sooner or later, he would be able to turn the corner and start scoring goals."

Championship round-up: Sheffield United leapfrog Leeds into second, while Millwall and Rotherham boost survival hopes

Sheffield United leapfrogged Leeds into the automatic promotion places after beating Preston 1-0 on Saturday.

The Whites lost by the same scoreline at Birmingham, suffering a second defeat in three games.

Che Adams proved to be a thorn in the side of Leeds

The Blues’ top scorer Che Adams had gone six games without a goal but ended that run on the half-hour mark to give Birmingham, who had lost five in a row, a first win since their nine-point deduction.

Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick scored the only goal in the 31st minute at Deepdale – where the hosts had not lost in seven.

West Brom’s automatic promotion hopes were dealt a serious blow with a 2-0 defeat at Millwall.

The Baggies had won three in a row but were behind when Ryan Tunnicliffe fired low under the goalkeeper.

Jay Rodriguez’s penalty just after the hour mark was put wide and the Baggies paid the price seven minutes later as Ahmed Heghazi deflected Ben Thompson’s cross into his own goal.

Heghazi was dismissed 10 minutes from time.

Bristol City remain in the play-off places, despite Anthony Pilkington’s added-time equaliser for Wigan.

A stunning long-range strike from Reece James flew into the top corner to stun the hosts after 37 minutes.

But Matty Taylor popped up at the far post after 65 minutes to equalise with a header and fellow substitute Kasey Palmer’s first-time effort put the hosts ahead before Pilkington struck.

Aston Villa scored twice in added time to make it six wins in a row and move up to fifth with a 3-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday, unbeaten in 11 games since Steve Bruce took charge, were ahead after just seven minutes as Gary Hooper converted George Boyd’s cross before John McGinn’s fourth goal in his last four levelled the scores.

Wednesday missed the chance to go ahead again from the spot as Steven Fletcher’s penalty was saved by Jed Steer after 57 minutes. And Albert Adomah and Tammy Abraham’s injury-time strikes made the Owls pay the price.

Aston Villa scored two late goals to boost their promotion hopes

Aston Villa scored two late goals to boost their promotion hopes

Swansea piled the pressure on under-fire Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis with a 3-1 win at the Liberty Stadium.

A sixth successive defeat continued a slide which has seen Boro slip out of the play-off places.

The Swans hit two quick-fire first-half goals through Matt Grimes’ penalty and Wayne Routledge’s low strike. Connor Roberts sealed the victory 19 minutes from time before George Saville’s consolation.

Derby’s play-off hopes were hit as Brentford equalised three times in a 3-3 draw at Griffin Park.

Harry Wilson, Jayden Bogle and Wilson again gave Derby the lead, but Julian Leanvier, Neal Maupay and Said Benrahma’s 82nd-minute goal hit back for Brentford, who had not scored in their previous four games.

Bolton’s clash with Ipswich was in doubt twice this week due to Wanderers’ various off-field issues and they may have wished it had not been played.

Bolton’s woes continued on Saturday afternoon

Bolton’s woes continued on Saturday afternoon

Collin Quaner’s first-half double gave rock-bottom Ipswich a 2-1 win to leave Bolton eight points from safety, despite a late consolation.

Rotherham remain in the relegation zone but boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

Michael Smith and Michael Ihiekwe’s goals either side of Lewis Grabban’s equaliser gave the Millers victory.

Hull extended their unbeaten home run to 11 matches with a 3-1 win against Reading, who are now just a point outside the bottom three.

Having drawn their last four matches 0-0, the first English side to do so since Arsenal in 2008/09, Stoke beat Blackburn 1-0 thanks to Peter Etebo’s first-half goal.

In the early 12:30pm kick-off, Norwich extended their advantage at the top of the Championship to seven points with a comprehensive 4-0 win over managerless QPR.

The Canaries, who have now won eight successive league games, were three goals up at the break after a dominant first half in which Emiliano Buendia, Marco Stiepermann and Teemu Pukki found the net.

Buendia was sent off for a poor foul on Josh Scowen after 71 minutes, but Pukki struck his 26th goal of the season to make it four.

Rangers, who sacked Steve McClaren this week, have now won just one of their last 16 Championship games and finished the day just five points outside the relegation zone.

The 28-year-old, who advised his family not to travel to the World Cup in Russia last summer due to racism fears, suggested he spends more money on a night out in London than offending countries get fined by UEFA.

The players’ union checked in with Rose on Friday to offer its support and has demanded stronger action be taken.

It said in a statement: “We have spoken to Danny directly, both after the Montenegro game and again today, to ensure he is aware that we are on his side and here to support him as a union and as fellow professionals.

“To see a senior England international so disheartened with his profession is a shocking indictment of the current experience of many players worldwide.

“The strongest possible sanctions must now be imposed on any team whose fans engage in racist behaviour from the stands.

“Fines are not proving effective, and therefore more strident punishments must be given – stadium bans and sporting sanctions are the minimum punishments required.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is keen for Rose to show the best way to combat the problem is by continuing as an “extraordinary” player.

Guardiola and Rose will come head-to-head next week when City visit Tottenham in the Champions League quarter-final and the Spaniard is keen for a chat with the left-back.

“Danny Rose has not to do that (retire),” Guardiola said.

“Next Tuesday, if I see him, I will tell him the best way to fight, to combat this kind of terrible situation, is fighting, being there every day.

“And, of course, because he’s an extraordinary player.”

Roy Hodgson gave Rose his first England cap in 2016 and is disturbed that a player still so young is wishing his career away.

The Crystal Palace manager said: “It is very disturbing that a player of that quality and the age he is as well, he is still relatively young and has a lot of football left in him, makes that decision that the racism side of the game is getting so bad and on top of him that he is even considering leaving it all behind earlier than he should.”

UEFA is investigating the abuse received by Rose and Hudson-Odoi and is set to make a ruling next month.

Given the high-profile nature of the incident and the players involved, the pressure will be on Europe’s governing body to hand down a harsh punishment if Montenegro are found guilty.
