Claude Makelele was so good he had a position named after him, ‘the Makelele role’ as it became known following his success with Chelsea.
The central midfielder was widely considered the best of his kind in the world and, judging from recent comments, took this role very seriously.
Chelsea faced off against Barcelona six times between 2005-2007 in the Champions League and shared a number of memorable encounters.
In those matches, the Frenchman would come up against Ronaldinho, who was at the peak of his powers, earning consecutive FIFA Player of the Year awards in 2004 and 2005.
Famed for his flamboyance and ability to make the best teams and players look ordinary, Ronaldinho was told in no uncertain terms by Makelele that he was not about to be humiliated.

In an interview with former Chelsea and France team-mate William Gallas via RMC Sports, Makelele said: “At one point in the game I went over to Ronaldinho.
“I said, ‘I prefer that you show good manners in dribbling against me because if there are any of those PlayStation tricks, I’ll send you to the hospital.’
“Do you know what he did? He apologised and asked for forgiveness.”
Makelele spent six seasons at Chelsea, winning two Premier Leagues, an FA Cup and two League Cups, before leaving for PSG in 2008.
