Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will look back on his career with regret, says Graeme Souness

Former Liverpool star Graeme Souness believes Daniel Sturridge will be ‘angry with himself’ when he retires.

The Scot, who won five top-flight titles with the Reds between 1978 and 1984, has also questioned the 29-year-old̢۪s attitude.

Sturridge̢۪s career has been plagued by injury and the striker is likely to leave Liverpool when his contract expires on June 30 after starting just four Premier League games this season.

He has played second fiddle to Roberto Firmino for most of Jurgen Klopp̢۪s spell as Reds boss.

Souness told Sky Sports: “He’s one of those boys who’ll finish his career, look back and think ‘I didn’t make the most of what God gave me’.

“I think he’s wonderfully talented. Great touch. When you have someone like him, so much ability, on a daily basis in training, you’d think ‘why can’t he have a pint of energy on matchdays?’

â€Å“I’d have him in front of [Divock] Origi, but I’m not saying he’s someone you can trust.

â€Å“That boy should be one of the first names on the team sheet, for England as well, but his career’s going to pass him by.

“He’ll never fulfil the potential he has. He’s been given a God-given talent that few have, but he doesn’t apply himself properly.”

Sturridge has deputised for the injured Firmino in Liverpool̢۪s latest wins over Huddersfield and Newcastle.

He failed to score in both games, but his clever back-heel led to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross, which Mohamed Salah volleyed past Martin Dubravka on Saturday.

Souness has suggested the former Chelsea forward̢۪s warm-up routine could be a cause of his injury problems.

He added: â€Å“I watched a game a few years ago, going through the motions in a warm-up – no wonder you get injured when you come on as a sub.

“I might be wrong, he might be a demon in training, but he’s a man who’s got so much ability, he’ll finish his career and be angry with himself.”
