Fulham 0-2 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola praises Citizens’ ‘incredible’ start to easy Premier League victory

Pep Guardiola heaped huge praise on his players’ ‘incredible’ start as Manchester City regained their place at the top of the Premier League.

The Citizens beat Fulham 2-0 in convincing fashion at Craven Cottage thanks to early goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero.

It means City are ahead of challengers for the title Liverpool by one point, although the Reds can go back to the summit with a win over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

However, City will still have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s men, with that match coming against Cardiff at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night – a contest the reigning champions are expected to win comfortably.

The victory was a routine one for City but Guardiola insisted that it could have been a banana skin off the back of an international break.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said:  â€Å“When you’ve just had an international break and you have the first game at 12:30pm on a sunny day and Fulham with the position they’re in we could have had the wrong approach.

â€Å“But the way we started in the first 15-20 minutes was incredible – not just for the goals we scored but we created chances and we were outstanding.

â€Å“After that the game was more calm, we created chances to score the second.

â€Å“I know how difficult it was for Liverpool to win here for Chelsea to win here so we know it. The Premier League is so tough.”

Football: Nike 'very concerned' about rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Nike is "very concerned" about a rape accusation against Brazilian soccer star Neymar, the world's largest sportswear maker said on Thursday (June 6), raising questions about its sponsorship of one of the sport's most famous players.
Neymar denies the allegation of rape and has said the woman was trying to extort him. The woman appeared on Brazilian TV on Wednesday and said Neymar raped her in a Paris hotel.
Mastercard Inc also cancelled a planned ad campaign featuring the star of the Brazilian national team and French club Paris Saint-Germain, Brazilian media reported on Thursday.
Mastercard said in a statement it was suspending its use of Neymar in advertising until the situation is "cleared up," according to reports in Brazil's three biggest newspapers.
The Nike statement said "we are very concerned" by the allegations "and will continue to closely monitor the situation."
A press representative for Mastercard in Brazil confirmed to Reuters the company had planned a campaign to coincide with this month's Copa America tournament, but she did not confirm a decision to suspend Neymar's role.
US press representatives for the company did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
A police report seen by Reuters showed that a woman had accused Neymar, 27, of raping her at a Paris hotel last month. Sao Paulo police are investigating the accusation.
Following media reports on the matter, Neymar posted a long video on Instagram, in which he denied the accusations, said he was a victim of extortion and shared messages he exchanged with the alleged victim, including racy photos he had received.
That led police in Rio de Janeiro to open an investigation into whether Neymar had committed a crime by posting those intimate pictures online.
A press representative for Neymar did not respond to requests for comment on the Mastercard sponsorship on a Wednesday night interview his accuser gave the SBT TV station.
"I was a victim of rape," she said in her first on-camera interview since her accusation became public.
She said that she and Neymar began exchanging private messages over social media, and that he paid for her flight to Paris and her hotel.
She said the relationship was consensual at first, but that Neymar quickly became aggressive, began to hit her and forced her to have sex with him without the use of a condom, despite her telling him repeatedly to stop.
Some of Neymar's teammates have come out in support of him, but national team coach Tite declined to pass judgment on the matter.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said on Thursday that Neymar would be dropped from the national team for the Copa America because of an ankle injury suffered in a friendly match against Qatar the night before.

Manchester City ‘should do the decent thing’ and replay FA Cup clash with Swansea City, Adrian Durham believes

talkSPORT host Adrian Durham believes Manchester City should replay their FA Cup match with Swansea City.

City benefited from a dubious penalty and replays showed Sergio Aguero̢۪s winner was offside as the Premier League champions came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

However, if VAR had been used it could have been a different story entirely.

The system has been used in this year̢۪s FA Cup but only at Premier League grounds.

As the match was at the Liberty Stadium it was not in use and City boss Pep Guardiola even apologised for his side benefiting from the decisions.

But talkSPORT host Durham thinks Guardiola and City should extend their apology and â€Å“do the decent thing” by offering the Championship club a replay.

Durham said: â€Å“In the past we have suggested that a game should be replayed because of a dodgy decision.

â€Å“I totally understand all those who say you just can’t do it because there were other decisions earlier in the game and it would happen all the time.

â€Å“This one I think is slightly different – Man City beating Swansea 3-2 having been 2-0 down.

â€Å“There was a dubious penalty in there but more than that we can see Aguero is offside for the winning goal but there is no VAR and there was VAR in a couple of the other quarter-finals.

Bersant Celina celebrates scoring Swansea’s second

3

â€Å“For me this debate is absolutely valid. If Manchester City, who we know have the best resources in the country bar none, just as a reward and giving Swansea what they deserve they should go to them and say ‘look it wasn’t right, there wasn’t VAR, do you want a replay of the game?’”

Durham̢۪s co-host, Darren Gough, did not agree that it should be replayed, though.

He said: â€Å“Have you lost the plot? So what are they going to say ‘I’ll tell you what we are going to do, we feel sorry for Swansea so we will have a replay. We’ll ring them up and say look we got away with it, let’s be honest about it and let’s have a replay’.

â€Å“It’s not happening. It just can’t happen. It’s ridiculous with all the games Manchester City have got to play going for the quadruple and you want them to play an extra game just because a penalty decision went their way?”

Durham said: â€Å“First things first, it is the decent, right and proper thing to do. That is the right thing for Manchester City to do. I think they know it and everybody knows it.”

Gough said: â€Å“What I would do if I were Swansea is put a complaint in with the FA because Swansea have all the facilities to use VAR at the Liberty.

â€Å“But what I didn’t realise is that the FA will only use it at Premier League stadiums but Swansea have a Premier League stadium.

Durham said: â€Å“It can’t happen every single week or every single year in the cup. This is an extraordinary set of circumstances and the whole thing you have just talked about there, this whole VAR thing, is totally unfair. It’s totally unworkable and has cost Swansea what would have been an amazing extra-time and potential shock in the FA Cup.”

Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor opens up about considering suicide and surviving Togo terrorist attack

Former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor has openly discussed contemplating suicide.

At the age of 16, the former Togo international moved to Ligue 1 side Metz in an attempt to make it in Europe.

However, after struggling to support his family at home, Adebayor admitted to feeling like a failure and tried to take his own life.

Emmanuel Adebayor has endured plenty of hardships throughout his life

“I was 16,’ he exclusively told the Daily Mail. “All I wanted to do was help my family out but they put huge pressure on me. I could not cope with it. When a family is poor, everyone is poor and there is huge solidarity. People will take a bullet for you. But when one makes it, it is like you owe everyone.

“At Metz I was on maybe £3,000 a month. My family asked for a house worth £500,000. The club were tired of me because of my behaviour. I remember sitting on my bed one night and just thinking ‘What am I doing here? Nobody’s happy with me, so what is the point of living?’

“There was a pharmacy below my apartment. I bought packet after packet of tablets. They did not want to sell it to me but I said it was for a charity in Togo. I made the preparations, I drank all the water. I was ready to go. Then I called my best friend at midnight.

“He told me not to rush, that I have things to live for. ‘You have the potential to change Africa.’ I thought “You are a dream-seller and I am not buying any dreams right now.’ But he took me out of the moment. I thought God must be keeping for something.”

Now playing for Istanbul Basaksehir, the 35-year-old has endured more than his fair share of hardships in life. Although his career has taken him from Monaco, London, Madrid and now to Istanbul, Adebayor has had to roll with plenty of devastating punches thrown at him by life.

After his father died, Adebayor admitted to becoming the ‘captain’ of his own family. In 2007, as captain of the Togo national team, reports claimed he was threatening to pull out of an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone because of a row over bonus payments.

Adebayor received death threats, but then scored twice in the game, only to be suspended by the Togo federation along with two of his team-mates.

And then, in 2010, the Togo captain was forced to carry his creaming teammates into hospital when the national team bus was ambushed by terrorists travelling through Angola.

Of the attack, the former Crystal Palace striker said: “For 42 minutes, all we heard were gunshots. Left, right, front and back. I just heard friends shouting but we could not move or do anything.

“As captain, I told everyone to call their families. I called my girlfriend and I told her ‘Listen, I am about to go.’

“She said ‘Go where?’ She was pregnant. I said ‘If the child is born, if it is a boy, name him Emmanuel Jr. If it is a girl, name her Princess Emannuela. She said ‘What are you talking about?’ And then I just had to say ‘I will call you later if I am still alive.”

â€Å“We are human beings, we feel the pain, the frustration. We have to do self-criticism, put our chest out for the bullets of what is coming now.

“It’s the second time the same [thing] happens to us. We cannot make these mistakes two years in a row, we have to reproach ourselves for what we are doing wrong, thinking that everything was finalised.

“We are the ones who play. The coach made the tactics that he made in the first leg. We, the players, have to be self-aware, we are the ones who play.

“We have to apologise for the attitude, we were not a team. To our families, our children, our fans, we have to ask for their forgiveness.

“It cannot be that in a minute we concede two goals. The fourth goal we looked like youngsters. We have to understand all the criticisms that are going to rain on us.”

Despite Valverde guiding Barcelona to back-to-back LaLiga triumphs, the manner of their semi-final second leg defeat will put pressure on his job.

He said: ”The scoreline was 4-0 and when that’s the case there are no excuses.

“Their second goal hurt us massively and the third one came in straight after that.

“They played well, and we have to congratulate them for reaching the final.”
