Football: Chelsea move into third spot above Tottenham after 3-0 win over Watford

LONDON (REUTERS) - Quickfire headed goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and David Luiz, both set up by Eden Hazard early in the second half, helped Chelsea to a 3-0 home victory against spirited Watford in the Premier League on Sunday (May 5).
Argentine marksman Gonzalo Higuain added a third with a cool finish in the 75th minute to move Chelsea closer to their target of a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
The win moved Chelsea into third place on 71 points, a point clear of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth.
After a frenzied first half during which Watford had the better chances with Troy Deeney, Gerard Deulofeu and Jose Holebas all lively, Chelsea, booed off at the break, came out flying in the second half.
Loftus-Cheek found the net in the 48th minute after a Hazard short corner and one-two with Pedro. Hazard lifted the ball to the far post and the tall midfielder nodded it home.
Moments later, Brazilian defender Luiz headed in Chelsea's second, straight from a Hazard corner before Chelsea improved their goal difference with the third from Higuain via a Pedro assist.
Both teams have preoccupations away from the league, with Chelsea facing Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday and Watford meeting Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 18.
"The schedule is tough but, when you have fantastic players, more than just 11, we can rotate and have the same quality," Luiz said.
"We have that. It's tough, but it's tough for everybody. We did well to get the three points but we have to still fight until the end."
Players and their families ran a lap of honour after their last home league game of the season, with club captain Gary Cahill, leaving Chelsea after six-and-a-half years, leading the players out.
The former England defender won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup, a Champions League and a Europa League trophy with the club, but fell out of favour with coach Maurizio Sarri this season.

Roman Abramovich to attend first competitive Chelsea match in a year to watch Europa League final against Arsenal

Roman Abramovich will watch his first competitive Chelsea match in a year when he takes his seat in the stands for their Europa League final match with Arsenal in Baku.

Abramovich, 52, did not attend any matches at Stamford Bridge during the 2018/19 campaign due to the denial of a visa extension by the UK government, following increasing tensions with his native Russia.

However Abramovich, who took control of the Blues in 2003, is expected to be in Azerbaijan next Wednesday as his club look to win the trophy for the first time since 2013.

Abramovich’s only recent public appearance at a Chelsea match was for last week’s Holocaust Memorial friendly in the US against New England Revolution, which they won 3-0, but lost midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek to a serious Achilles injury in the process.

Abramovich reportedly turned down Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £2billion offer for the club last summer, amid speculation the Russian was ready to cut his losses in west London and sell to Britain’s richest man.

He also put plans to redevelop Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium on hold amid his visa troubles, leading to suggestions he is no longer willing to invest in the club, something later denied by chairman Bruce Buck.

“Everything he’s doing reaffirms his commitment to Chelsea,” Buck told Sky Sports.

Champions League final: Sean Cox congratulates Liverpool for winning European Cup with defeat of Tottenham

A message congratulating Liverpool for winning the Champions League has been sent on behalf of Sean Cox, the Reds fan left with life-changing injuries after being assaulted outside Anfield last year.

Mr Cox was attacked by a Roma supporter before Liverpool’s home Champions League semi-final last April, with the father of three from Dunboyne in County Meath needing emergency surgery.

He was in a coma for six weeks following the attack and was later transferred to a rehabilitation centre. He left care for the first time a couple of months ago, and was allowed home on Saturday night to watch the showpiece European fixture.

And Mr Cox was ‘overjoyed’ as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 to win their sixth European Cup.

“On Sean’s behalf, I want to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Liverpool Football Club on winning the Champions League,’ Mr Cox’s wife, Martina, told RTE.

“The club and its fans have taken Sean, our family and I into their hearts since Sean’s attack last year.

“Nobody could be happier than the Cox family for Jurgen Klopp, his players and the wonderful Liverpool fans.

“Sean watched the game with us at home, proudly wearing a signed Liverpool jersey sent to him by the club’s CEO Peter Moore last week.

“He was overjoyed when the final whistle blew and Liverpool were crowned champions.”

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool inside the first two minutes, with Divock Origi adding a late second for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp and his players were treated to a hero’s welcome as they returned to Merseyside on Sunday, with hundreds of thousands of Liverpool supporters lining the streets to celebrate the European success.

Jack Butland has put clubs on alert by telling talkSPORT he wants to return to the Premier League and will ‘seriously consider’ any offers to leave Stoke City this summer.

He played 45 league games, just missing one match due to the birth of his son, and kept 18 clean sheets – the third best in the league behind Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson (21) and Middlesbrough’s Darren Randolph (19).

Butland was recently named in England’s 23-man squad for next months’ UEFA Nations League finals – one of only two players who do not currently play in England’s top flight (the other being Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho).

And the young goalkeeper has told talkSPORT he ‘needs’ to move back to the Premier League to ensure his long-term future in the Three Lions team.

Speaking to Drivetime from St George’s Park on Tuesday, Butland said: “I always have and I always will give everything for Stoke City, but I need to be in the Premier League.

“I’ve tried to help the club back there but I know where I need to be to be in this [England] squad.

Watford 0-1 Arsenal: Gunners scrape through against 10 men Hornets as Troy Deeney sees red 11 minutes into match

Arsenal did just enough to beat a 10 men Watford side to climb back into the top four of the Premier League.

A disastrous two minutes at the start of the first half saw the Hornets go down 1-0 and their captain Troy Deeney sent off.

The home side battled against the Gunners for the rest of the match and may have felt they could have got something out of the game.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang challenges Ben Foster for the goal

Arsenal made six changes for their Premier League clash at Watford as Konstantinos Mavropanos made his first start since May.

The Gunners face Napoli in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final and travel to Italy defending a 2-0 lead.

Unai Emery is likely to have one eye on that fixture with Mavropanos starting as well as fellow recalled players Shkodran Mustafi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alex Iwobi and Bernd Leno, while Granit Xhaka recovered from a groin problem to be included.

Troy Deeney was sent off against Arsenal

Watford meanwhile made four alterations from their victorious FA Cup semi-final win over Wolves as Ben Foster, Christian Kabasele, Daryl Janmaat and Adam Masina came in.

Arsenal took the lead in the 10th minute through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The striker capitalised on hesitation from Ben Foster to close down the goalkeeper and block his clearance, with the ball rebounding into the hosts’ net.

Andre Gray’s shot is blocked by Ainsley Maitland-Niles

3

Andre Gray’s shot is blocked by Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Things got even worse for the Hornets just a minute later as captain Troy Deeney was shown a straight red card for throwing an arm towards Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira. Despite playing with 10 men, Watford troubled Arsenal throughout the remainder of the first half.

Bernd Leno was forced into saves from Craig Cathcart and an Etienne Capoue free-kick, but the Gunners held their 1-0 lead at the break.

Arsenal made a confident start to the second half after the introduction of Mesut Ozil and created a number of chances.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had several opportunities to double their lead but failed to trouble Ben Foster.

Watford, fresh from securing a place in just their second FA Cup final, were still in the game and Adam Masina was unfortunate to see a long-range strike crack against Leno’s crossbar just after the hour.

Emery switched formation to a back-three before soon reverting back to the system which had started the game, bringing on Matteo Guendouzi and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in an attempt to wrestle control of the contest.

Maitland-Niles was soon on hand to keep Arsenal in front, bravely sliding in to block Gray as Watford headed into the final 10 minutes with their visitors again on the ropes.

Will Hughes headed over as the volume inside Vicarage Road rose, Aubameyang flashing a shot wide from what proved to be a rare opening for Arsenal.

Emery’s side, despite struggling against a team which played for 79 minutes with 10 men, were left exhausted at the full-time whistle as the players embraced on the pitch having survived a stern test of their mentality.
