Pep Guardiola has thanked Liverpool for pushing his Manchester City side all the way in the 2018/19 title race.
City beat Brighton 4-1 to retain the trophy by a solitary point on Sunday, with the Reds’ 2-0 win over Wolves rendered irrelevant.
Guardiola stated: “We have to say congratulations to Liverpool as well of course and thank you so much.
“Because they help us to push and to increase our standard from the last season. Because to compete against this side, this team, we should do what we have done, so incredible.
“Incredible, 198 points [in two seasons]. Make back to back and an incredible, incredible season for us.
“I think last season Manchester City made the standard higher, so that is the level of the Premier League, and Liverpool help us by being there all the time.
“So to win the title you have to win 14 games in a row, so we knew it for three months we could not lose one point…
“It’s the toughest title we have won in all my career, by far.”
City rattled off 14 successive victories to seal the title, with Guardiola then admitting his players and coaches are nowhere near satisfied.
Should they beat Watford in the FA Cup final this weekend, City will become the first team in English football history to win all three domestic trophies.
“Well I’m not going to deny it is exhausting, but winning is so addictive and now we have the chance to win the FA Cup and a treble,” said Guardiola.”
“Then we have to make decisions for next season to come back strong. Liverpool will maintain and so we have to be better.
“Competitive people are never satisfied, it’s never enough. We want more and more.
“And that’s why the second one, to make it back to back shows me this kind of thing. It shows me it wasn’t enough (for the players), that one wasn’t enough.”
