England 2-0 Denmark: Lionesses win penultimate friendly ahead of World Cup

England Women beat Denmark 2-0 in their penultimate World Cup warm-up match.

Nikita Parris and Jill Scott got the goals either side of half time as preparations continue for the tournament in France this summer.

Parris struck in first-half stoppage time at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium and Scott, the Lionesses’ captain for the afternoon, added a header just before the hour mark.

Denmark, the beaten Euro 2017 finalists who failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup, had a Signe Bruun effort ruled out for handball just prior to Parris’ goal, and skipper Pernille Harder sent a curling free-kick narrowly wide at 2-0.

England’s final warm-up game is against New Zealand at Brighton’s Amex Stadium next Saturday, before their campaign gets underway on June 9 with a Group D clash against Scotland in Nice.

Scott wore the armband with boss Phil Neville having opted to name regular captain Steph Houghton on the bench as he made three changes from last month’s 2-1 win against Spain.

Scott and Houghton’s former City team-mate Parris among those coming in a few days on from her move to Champions League winners Lyon.

Denmark made the better start as Sanne Troelsgaard, Harder – the Wolfsburg star who came second in last year’s inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or – and Bruun sent attempts off-target and Troelsgaard saw her strike blocked by Jade Moore.

England then went close to taking the lead in the 17th minute when Scott delivered an excellent through-ball and Ellen White’s shot went wide.

With the hosts building some momentum, a Georgia Stanway strike deflected behind and Scott then got on the end of a ball into the box from the 20-year-old, lifting her effort over the bar.

Demi Stokes subsequently fired wide of the Danish goal before Karen Bardsley gathered a Troelsgaard shot at the other end.

Denmark then had the ball in the net but the effort was disallowed for handball, Bruun deemed to have controlled the ball with her arm before prodding in.

And moments later England were front as the visitors failed to deal with Beth Mead’s free-kick, the ball came to Parris and she took a touch before firing home.

Bardsley did well six minutes into the second half as she got down at the feet of Harder and saved.

England then doubled their advantage around the hour mark as Mead collected the ball from Stanway, sent in a cross and Scott crashed a header past goalkeeper Katrine Abel.

Harder’s free-kick curling narrowly wide nine minutes later was the best Denmark could muster as England saw out the victory.

Tottenham news: Dutch FA cancel Ajax and other Eredivisie games ahead of Champions League semi-final

In an effort to help Ajax in their Champions League semi-final against Tottenham, an entire weekend of Eredivisie fixtures have been cancelled ahead of the clash.

Dutch FA rules specify at least two days of rest between games and that all clubs play on the last two matchdays.

Ajax were set to play De Graafschap on Sunday, 28 April, then travel to Spurs for the first leg on Tuesday, 30 April. As it stands now, they play Vitesse on 23 April before a seven-day rest period.

Ajax will get an extended rest, with the Dutch FA taking the decision to postpone every fixture ahead of the Champions League semi-final

â€Å“We have discussed various scenarios,” said Dutch FA (KNVB) technical director Eric Gudde on its website. “This decision has now been discussed with all clubs but they must of course still discuss this with the municipalities and the police.”

It said the change was needed because Ajax were in the Champions League semi-finals, the Dutch Cup final and challenging for the Eredivisie title – but stressed it was about player welfare and not a decision designed to give the team an advantage over the Premier League side.

Ajax win the 1995 Champions League final

Ajax, with Edwin van der Sar, Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert, beat reigning European champions Milan in 1995

It added clubs agreed when the fixture list was compiled at the start of the season that changes may need to be made in ‘the very small chance that one of the clubs would go that far in the Champions League’.

â€Å“What is really nice is the reason why this was necessary — the semi-final place of Ajax in the Champions League. Not only Ajax, but all Dutch football benefits from this.”

The regular Dutch league season will be extended to 15 May.

Ajax are top of the Eredivisie table on goal difference from PSV Eindhoven, with both clubs on 74 points after 30 games. They are also in the Dutch Cup final, playing Willem II on 5 May.

Spurs, meanwhile, host West Ham on Saturday 27 April at 12.30pm in their bid to finish in the top four.

Ajax have beaten Real Madrid and Juventus en route to their first semi-final appearance in the Champions League since 1997. They won it in 1995 and secured three successive triumphs in the competition between 1971 and 1973.

Tottenham, who beat Manchester City in one of the most thrilling games ever, have not appeared in a European Cup semi-final since 1962 when they were beaten by Benfica. Since its re-branding as the Champions League in 1992, they had never previously made it past the quarter-finals.

The KNVB met clubs on Thursday to discuss the plans – and it admitted many were not happy about the change.

Gudde acknowledged it is impossible to satisfy everyone and explained why all fixtures had to be cancelled, not just De Graafschap v Ajax.

“That would mean that only this match was played after 12 May,” he said.

“Clubs and fans deserve a fair and as exciting as possible end to the competition, hence the starting point of playing simultaneously on the last two match days.

“Ajax plays for the championship and De Graafschap is in the danger zone for relegation. Not only would the denouement remain in one game that is played later, this also gives De Graafschap more time to prepare for this perhaps decisive game than the other relegation candidates.”

Dutch FA Gives Ajax a Break. Tottenham is also at a disadvantage due to the fact that it played West Ham United on Saturday, while the Eredivisie - the top Dutch league - saw all of its matches postponed this weekend in order to help Ajax be as rested as possible for their Champions League clash.

Phil Jones may be one of the most divisive footballers of his generation.

Lauded as ‘better than’ John Terry by Sir Alex Ferguson, it would be fair to say the defender has not yet lived up to those lofty expectations.

Always willing to put his body on the line, Jones can often be seen in uncompromising positions in internet memes as he is (quite literally) willing to do anything to keep a clean sheet.

However, the England international is undoubtedly a natural centre-half as his frame and reading of the game are best suited to the middle of the defence.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to have other ideas.

The Norwegian appears to have selected Jones at right-back for the crucial Champions League clash with Barcelona on Tuesday night.

With a place in the semi-final up for grabs and just one goal required to take the game to extra time, the tie is finely poised.

But some United fans feel as though the pendulum of momentum has swung in favour of the Spanish side after seeing Jones potentially starting at right-back.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas appointed Marseille boss

Former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas appointed Marseille boss

Former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is the new boss at Ligue 1 side Marseille.

Villas-Boas, who was most recently in charge of Chinese side Shanghai SIPG, replaces Rudi Garcia at the Ligue 1 club.

Villas-Boas, commonly known as AVB, has spent the past 18 months out of management following his decision to leave the Chinese Super League and has dabbled in motor sport, competing in the 2018 Dakar Rally.

The 41-year-old joined Chelsea from Porto – where he won the Europa League aged just 33 – in 2011, but joined Tottenham in 2012 when the Blues sacked him.

He also spent two years at Zenit in Russia where he won the league and Russian Cup before his stint in China. Villas-Boas had also recently been linked with becoming the new Celtic manager.

Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1 this season, 30 points behind champions Paris Saint-Germain. They won the Champions League in 1993, while they were last champions of France in 2013.

“We’re delighted to bring in a coach whose success has been recognised at the highest level in Europe and the world,” Marseille owner Frank McCourt said.

“The philosophy and approach to the game of Andre Villas-Boas fits with what we want for OM and will contribute to revitalising our project after a disappointing season. Our expectations are still just as big and we will make the necessary chances to achieve our objectives.”

Tottenham vs Ajax: Harry Redknapp on how Spurs must approach first leg of Champions League semi-final

Harry Redknapp has told Tottenham to make their home advantage count and ‘get after’ Ajax in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Spurs host the Dutch youngsters at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night, in the battle of Europe̢۪s two surprise packages.

The north London side have suffered a blow to their first-leg preparations, with top striker Harry Kane ruled out with injury and in-form forward Heung-min Son suspended.

Kane and Son have been directly involved in 60 goals between them for Spurs this season

3

Kane and Son have been directly involved in 60 goals between them for Spurs this season

Without their two main sources of goals, some have suggested a draw would be a good enough result to take to Amsterdam for the second leg next Wednesday.

But former manager Redknapp says Tottenham should feed off the energy of their fans and be on the front foot right from kick off.

â€Å“They’re at home in the first leg, so they will want to have a go tonight,” Redknapp told Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

â€Å“My philosophy would to be get after them early from the first whistle. Right from the off, get after them.

â€Å“They’re obviously missing Harry and Son, two big losses, but I’m sure whoever they play will step up to the plate tonight.

â€Å“It’s going to be a great game and the crowd will be absolutely flying. These European nights at Tottenham are incredible, the atmosphere will be amazing.”

Redknapp has told Tottenham to ‘get after’ Ajax at home

3

Redknapp has told Tottenham to ‘get after’ Ajax at home

Kane and Son are a huge miss for Spurs, but Redknapp believes they could have a secret weapon to stun Ajax.

The Dutch outfit have shocked just about everyone to reach the final four, after dumping out Juventus and defending champions Real Madrid en route to the semis.

They also made it out of a group, unbeaten, which featured Bayern Munich and Benfica.

But, having enjoyed success against a host of Europe̢۪s most technically-gifted teams, Redknapp believes Ajax̢۪s youthful side could be taken aback by a more direct approach.

And, remembering how the Tottenham of yesteryear played with legendary goalscorer Bobby Smith leading the line, the former boss says Fernando Llorente could be the hero again following his  winning goal in the quarter-final epic against Manchester City.

Asked about how Pochettino is likely to set his team up, Redknapp added: â€Å“He’ll probably play one up top with Llorente, with Dele Alli playing in behind.

â€Å“They’re a young side, Ajax, and it’s probably something different to what they’re used to, having a few balls thrown into the box more.

â€Å“The days of getting it out wide and crossing it into the far post are over. Now they want to pass it in, everything is passed along the floor.

Fernando Llorente scored the crucial goal to send Spurs through to the semis

3

Fernando Llorente scored the crucial goal to send Spurs through to the semis

â€Å“There are very few balls thrown in to the box now and very few times you see the goalkeeper being clattered.

â€Å“I remember watching Tottenham play back in the 1960s with Bobby Smith against a Polish team, and in the first few minutes Bobby hit the goalkeeper and mangled him up in the back of the net.

â€Å“He never came for another cross or moved off his line for the rest of the night. I think the game ended up about 7-0, Spurs absolutely slaughtered them.”
