FA slams ‘unacceptable’ abuse of England players in Montenegro and welcomes UEFA charge

The Football Association has condemned the racist abuse of England’s players in Montenegro on Monday night.

UEFA has charged Montenegro with racist behaviour after Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi were subjected to monkey chants during the Three Lions’ 5-1 victory in Podgorica.

An FA spokesperson said: “This is unacceptable at any level of the game and we welcome UEFA’s decision today to take disciplinary action.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting UEFA with their investigation and the players and staff involved.”

Following incidents of racist abuse at English grounds in recent months, the FA’s statement added that it recognised there was also work to be done at home.

“The issues we saw last night are not isolated to any specific country, and despite progress English football still has its own incidents of discrimination,” the statement said.

“Our experience is that by combining both sanctions and education, whilst working alongside campaigners such as Kick It Out, real progress can be made. But there remains much work to be done.

“Football is a game for all and we must all take responsibility to work together and share our experiences and learnings to tackle discrimination in the game.”

Montenegro also face charges relating to crowd disturbances, the throwing of objects, setting off of fireworks and the blocking of stairways at the Gradski Stadion.

A missile was thrown at Sterling as he celebrated England’s fifth goal by pulling his ears out in reference to monkey chants aimed at his team-mates.

UEFA’s minimum sanction for racist behaviour is a partial stadium closure.

The abhorrent scenes marred what was an impressive display from Gareth Southgate’s men as they continued their perfect start to the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

Ross Barkley’s brace was complemented by goals from Michael Keane, Harry Kane and Sterling as the Three Lions overcame the hosts’ early opener.

UEFA said the case would be heard by its Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 16, prior to the next round of qualifying fixtures in June.

Montenegro’s next match will also be at home when they face Kosovo on June 7.

The top four might’ve been all-but decided already, but Tottenham scuppered a fine opportunity to leapfrog Chelsea into third by slipping to a 2-2 draw at home to Everton.

Fresh from their miraculous Champions League comeback in Amsterdam, Spurs took the early lead through Eric Dier before two quickfire goals from Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun turned things around.

Christian Eriksen equalised but it wasn’t enough to climb above the Blues, who played out a goalless draw at Leicester.

Arsenal needed an unrealistic eight-goal swing to usurp Tottenham in the top four and now the Gunners must win their Europa League final against Chelsea to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Nonetheless, they still beat Burnley 3-1 thanks largely to a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – leaving the Gabon international level with Mane and Mohamed Salah as the league’s joint-top scorers this season with 22 goals.

The final day usually provides a ludicrous amount of goals and today was no exception.

With nothing left to play for, several defenders were on the beach as Crystal Palace beat Bournemouth 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller and ten-man Watford lost 4-1 at home to West Ham.

Already-relegated Fulham also conceded four goals at home, losing 4-0 to Newcastle, while Huddersfield bid farewell to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

Mark Lawrenson has revealed how much Jurgen Klopp has embraced Liverpool’s history throughout his time as manager.

Klopp has revitalised the Reds since his appointment in October 2015, guiding the Merseyside club to three finals – including last season’s Champions League final – and into contention for this year’s Premier League.

There are just four matches separating Liverpool from their first league championship in 29 years, though success is out of their hands; Manchester City will retain the title as long as they win each of their remaining matches, as they are currently two points behind the Reds but have a game in hand.

Failing to win the Premier League would be heart-wrenching for Liverpool, but such an outcome should not take away from just how brilliant they have been this season.

There is a renewed sense of optimism around Anfield, and supporters believe the club have, in Klopp, a manager who truly understands what Liverpool represent – both on and off the pitch.

Most remarkably, Klopp appears to have cast the shackles of history off Liverpool which have for so long weighed ever so heavily on the club.

And he has done this by embracing Liverpool’s incredible past – a past filled with 18 league championships, five European cups and multiple other trophies.

This is according to Mark Lawrenson, the former defender who won 20 major honours during his playing days at Anfield.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Lawrenson explained what Klopp has done to ensure Liverpool’s history does not overwhelm him, while also revealing what the German always does when club legends turn up at their Melwood training ground.

Lawrenson said: “I remember, when he came to Liverpool, saying that a lot of the other teams in the league would be thinking they wished they’d got him. What you see is what you get with Jurgen.

“He gets the football club, he gets the history.

“Quite a few of the managers in the past have tried to play the history down, as if it weighed a little too heavy on their shoulders, and didn’t like having the former players around.

“But Klopp gets it. Every time you go to the training ground, he laughs and says ‘here they are again, the winners’. He always stops for a chat, and picks your brain about the club. He’s embraced it.

“So his job has been about more than winning this title.

“Though it’d be nice for him to win it, because every time he’s asked about not winning something with Liverpool, I’m sure he’s wanted to chin whoever’s asked it.”

Winning the Premier League would be a real achievement for Liverpool, especially as they are going head-to-head for the title with one of world football’s all-time great teams, Manchester City.

Securing the league crown was not Liverpool’s aim before the start of the season, however, Lawrenson reveals.

He continued: “It would be fabulous to win the title, obviously, but Klopp’s remit at the start of the season, from the [owners] Fenway Sports Group, was Champions League qualification.

“They’ve got other sporting franchises, they know how it works, and they’ll know how outstanding Man City are.

“So finishing second would be tough to take, but it wouldn’t undermine Klopp at all. He’s seriously improved every player at the club, which is a feat in itself.”
