Mauricio Pochettino exclusive: ‘Tottenham must become world-class on the pitch to match world-class new stadium’

Mauricio Pochettino has challenged his Tottenham team to back up their new world-class facilities with world-class performances on the pitch.

Spurs kicked off a new era for the club in their new £1billion stadium in fine style, as they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Wednesday night.

It was a euphoric evening for supporters, who packed out the 62,000-seater ground to create an amazing atmosphere as they returned home to N17.

And it was a decent night for the team too, who saw off the Eagles rather comfortably as goals from Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen sealed their first victory at their new home.

Pochettino was in a jubilant mood after the final whistle and hinted at a long-term future in charge, saying he feels ‘very lucky to be manager of this amazing club’.

But, the boss also sent a message to his team: they need to raise their level on the field to match the state-of-the-art stadium they can now call home.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT commentator Sam Matterface following the match, Pochettino said: “I think we are now in a different level with our facilities – with our training ground and our new stadium – and now we need to be at the same level on the pitch.

“That is what the club and our fans deserve. We need to start to create more history for this club.

“Now is only about winning. This is a close of a chapter and we need to open another to try to be sure we are realistic competitors with all the big clubs who are competing for big things.”

Pochettino could barely contain his excitement after watching his side deliver in their first game in their brand new ground.

Fans created an electric atmosphere, but it was tinged with a nervous energy having gone into the game on the back of a five-game winless run.

The relief around the stands when Son and Eriksen found the back of the net was palpable, and Pochettino was happy his side delivered for the supporters who have been made to wait for their big day.

The manager also reserved special praise for chairman Daniel Levy, who he said had ‘made a dream a reality’.

“I am so happy,” Pochettino added.

“It’s difficult to describe with words how I’m feeling now. I am a lucky man to be here today in this amazing stadium and to be the manager of this amazing club.

“The result was fantastic, the performance was very good and the party was complete.

“The players were focused, of course, but at the same time it was about touching the glory and we touched the glory.

“To be in, I think, the best stadium in the world and play football, you can’t avoid thinking about it and enjoy it.

“But our responsibility was to be focused on the game because we needed that victory, the three points were massive to be in a very good position in the table.

“But at the same time, I repeat, it was about touching the glory for the fans, for the staff and of course for Daniel Levy, who is the architect of this amazing project.

“I want to congratulate him. He made the dream a reality.

“To be part of this amazing day, all I can say is thank you for Daniel and I want to tell everyone I am a very lucky man to be here today.”

MUNICH • Having played for both clubs, Dietmar Hamann is well qualified to pass judgment on the state of affairs between Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
So Jurgen Klopp's players should heed his warning when he says the Reds are running into the six-time defending German champions "at the wrong time".
Ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Allianz Arena today, the former Germany midfielder told the Liverpool Echo: "It has been a tough first season for Munich boss Niko Kovac, but he has kept his cool, even when fans were calling for his head in the autumn.
"Fast forward a few months and they are looking unbeatable, with a new belief pulsing through the Bavarian ranks and favourites to retain their title.
"Their confidence will contrast with the mood at Liverpool and I'll take Bayern in another tight, low-scoring encounter."
Hamann's belief also stems from Bayern's impressive domestic form - they have won 12 of their past 13 league games - to move to the top of the Bundesliga for the first time since September.
Klopp is also wary of the Bavarian giants, despite holding them to a goal-less draw in the first leg at Anfield, telling the club website: "It's a much more positive moment for Bayern. They are top of the table and winning games comfortably again.
"But, if we are at our best, we can be exceptional."
With the onus on Bayern to attack at home, it could favour the visitors' pace on the break, although Liverpool will need to improve on their travels in Europe, having lost all three away fixtures in the Champions League group phase this season.
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson said: "(Bayern) will need to come out a bit more, their fans will demand they try to create.
"It's all about trying to keep them out first and foremost and then hopefully, we can take the chances we get."
Fellow defender Virgil van Dijk, who missed the first leg through suspension, also believes his team will "definitely have our own moments because of the quality we have" even though it will be a "very hard game".
He added: "It is going to be an exciting tie... we need to be up for a big fight because they are probably going to come all in, especially in the beginning. It is going to be tough and we need to do better than we did in the last away games.
"We will need to be patient, ready for what is coming. There will be times when we are going to be under pressure because they have a lot of quality."

Winners of FA Cup final between Manchester City and Watford will not get case of champagne

The winners of this year’s FA Cup will not be awarded a case of champagne out of respect for players’ religious beliefs.

There has been a longstanding tradition that the winning side were welcomed by a case of the alcohol inside the dressing room after the game.

However, the Football Association has taken the decision to stop the practice beginning this season out of respect for religious beliefs that forbid alcohol consumption.

The successful squad will be provided with an alcohol-free substitute so the players can still celebrate in the usual way of spraying their team-mates with the drink.

An FA spokesman said: “Winning teams will be awarded with non-alcoholic ‘champagne’ for their celebrations in all FA competitions, starting from this year’s Emirates FA Cup Final.

“This is to ensure that we are as inclusive as possible to players and communities who may be prohibited from alcohol, as well as any players who are under 18.”

Watford and Manchester City will compete for this year’s trophy at Wembley on May 18.

Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure and City players Riyad Mahrez, Benjamin Mendy and Ilkay Gundogan are all Muslim, which forbids alcohol consumption.

A report in the Daily Mail claims the FA has been proactive in swapping champagne to an alcohol-free substitute and there is not believed to have been any complaints in the past.

The report says: “FA chiefs had considered implementing the change sooner but was concerned that they would be branded as ‘party-poopers’.”

Luis Suarez has come back to bite Liverpool with a huge goal against his former club in their Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona.

And yes, of course he celebrated.

The Uruguayan spent three years at Anfield, making over 100 appearances and becoming a cult hero, but that didn’t hold him back.

Despite not scoring in the Champions League for over a year, he ended his drought by sliding onto Jordi Alba’s inch-perfect cross to give Barcelona the lead at the Nou Camp.

Liverpool fans stood by Suarez through various controversies, including alleged racism after an incident involving former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

But the striker, speaking before the game, said there can be no room for sentiment on such a big stage.

He told the Daily Mail: “In the build up to the game it’s nice to talk about how massively grateful I am to Liverpool for all they gave me but, you know me, once I’m on the pitch there will be no friendships, no companions, no thought for all the lovely moments.

And he stayed true to his word with a full-on knee slide.

Raul Jimenez: Wolves complete permanent signing of on-loan forward for club-record fee

Raul Jimenez has completed a permanent move to Wolves for a club-record fee, the Premier League side have confirmed.

Jimenez, the Mexico forward, has spent the season on loan at Molineux having joined on a year-long deal from Benfica last summer.

He has scored 15 goals in 37 games for Nuno’s side – also chipping in with three assists – as Wolves battle to finish seventh in the Premier League and also hope to book their place in the FA Cup final.

They take on Watford this weekend in the second semi-final, with the victor facing either Manchester City or Brighton in the Wembley showpiece.

Wolves had the option to sign Jimenez on a permanent basis written into their loan deal for the 27-year-old, and they are believed to have paid £32million to secure his signature.

Jimenez has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Midlands club.

He becomes Wanderers’ most expensive signing ever surpassing previous record holder Adama Traore, who joined the club last summer for £18million.

The forward said: “It’s a great honour for me to now be a permanent member of the team. I’m very happy for this permanent deal as I feel that being at Wolves suits me.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here, I enjoy playing in the pitch and, along with all my teammates, we try our best in all the matches to win.

“Since I’ve arrived here it’s all been so good. We’ve had some good moments, some bad moments; but the best ones have been so good and I’m very happy for that.”

Kevin Thelwell, the club’s sporting director, added: “The impact Raul has made during his short time at the club has been fantastic and we’re delighted that he’ll be part of the club’s long-term future.

“From the second he walked through the door, he settled straight into the group, and that reflects in his performance, with Raul providing assists and overall selfless performances, as well as obviously goals.

“His goals in the Premier League and FA Cup have been vital to this season’s success and we’re looking forward to seeing him contribute even more during what will be an exciting end to the season in both competitions.

“Raul’s permanent signing shows the ambition of this football club and the determination to make sure the future is an exciting one.”

Jimenez, who has made 71 appearances for Mexico, began his career with Club America in his homeland before moving to Europe in 2014 to join Atletico Madrid.

He left after a single season in Spain for Benfica, spending three years with the Portuguese outfit until completing his loan switch to Wolves last summer.

LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that he is focusing solely on his team and nobody else.
The Reds lead the English Premier League by a point from Manchester City and will get an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table today when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
But the German told a pre-match conference: "We have to be consistent. So many things can happen, why should we think about one opponent like we are the only ones who can stop City?
"It's not like that. Only City can stop City, to be honest. We have to play our own game and try to get as many points as possible, that's all."
The Reds are the only unbeaten side left in the league this season and are flying high on 45 points, one more than champions City, who host Crystal Palace tomorrow.
Wolves are in a good run of form themselves, winning three straight following two defeats and are seventh in the standings on 25 points.
"It's an outstanding project, what they did last year in the Championship," Klopp added of today's opponents, referring to their 99-point title-winning campaign.
"Then they brought in a lot of players again and needed a bit of time, now they're really strong. We have to go there and be at our best."
One Liverpool player who is arguably at his best at the moment is forward Xherdan Shaqiri, who scored two goals in the 3-1 win over Manchester United last weekend.
The Swiss was fortunate to get a move to Anfield in July, having been part of a relegated Stoke side, and it is only now that he is starting to suggest he can be a key figure.
There were questions over whether he had the necessary work ethic for the demanding Klopp.
Answering those questions has taken time, but he is getting there, as the Liverpool boss himself has acknowledged.
"Shaq needs time, it's normal," Klopp said. "He knows that he has so much potential still to improve. But of course he's the guy for decisive moments, and we have to make sure that it stays like this."
Shaqiri, 27, once stated in an interview that he felt his new club "can win everything in the world".
If that statement seemed hubristic, it was at least made from a position of knowledge as to what it takes to be successful - he was part of the Bayern Munich squad that won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2013 and 2014.
That winning nous may prove useful in a Liverpool squad full of talent but short on experience when it comes to winning league titles.
In addition to his goal-scoring threat, he also possesses an ability to unlock defences with short and long-range passing and an appreciation of how to find and exploit space. Those skills, in addition to his ability as a free-kick taker, are likely to be vital in tight games.
Klopp has hinted that there will be opportunities for him across the attacking line, even if it comes at the expense of one of the team's menacing trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
"He is someone who makes a big difference because he can fit in so many positions in our system," the manager said.
Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes his team can match Arsenal's 2003-04 "Invincibles" by going the whole season unbeaten and lifting the title.
